2010 Wessex League Table

Wessex League vs Gloucestershire at Bristol & Clifton - 18 April 2010
Team: Jason Hampton. Steve Buzza, James Smith, James Holt, Leon Fricker, Andrew Place, Jimmy Mullen, James Pickard, Tom Jessamine and Dan Rosevear

Devon achieved an excellent win to start the Wessex League season. Fielding a young but experienced side littered with 1st team action from last season got off to great start with Buzza and Smith maintaining their 100% record in the foursomes to date. Also winning against a very strong pair from the Gloucestershire was a new combination of Jessamine & Pickard - winning on the last after the opposition hit it into the trees pressing for a victory. Holt & Rosevear were also victorious as youth triumped over experience in the last match.

The singles got off to great start with Mr Dependable, Jason Hampton, coming out on top in the opening game. Leon Fricker visited parts of the course no other could reach on his way to victory in the 3rd game, proving that a great short-game is worth it’s weight in gold. James Smith was one up going to the last hole needing only to half the game - his opponent eagled the 18th!

The focused Andrew Place looked like a new man taking over Gloucestershire’s new South African star 2&1. Devon’s other short game wizard Jimmy Mullen would not lie down against his big hitting opponent winning the last in fine style with a birdie 4.

At this point Devon needed just ½ a point to win the match but Tom Jessamine, who struggled to find top form, lost 4&2 and James Pickard also struggled to make the putts when needed losing out 3&2. Dan Rosevear went in at the deep end - he played one of their most experienced players who was much in form winning 5&4 over Dan.

This left the last game with James Holt needing a half at 18 to win the overall match stood on the last tee all square, his opponent hit a drive straight down the middle of the fairway but due to the wind reached the fairway bunker. James hit a great 3 wood on the same line but short of the bunker followed by a 4 iron into the heart of the green with everything looking rosy for Devon. The Gloucestershire man then proceeded to hit out of the bunker and pitched up to 4 feet holing out for a birdie 4.  James had 2 putts from 40 feet to halve the game and win the match which he did just like an experienced tour professional.

Team: Ryan Acres, Steve Buzza, James Carson, Jason Hampton, James Holt, Jimmy Mullen, Colin Nolan, James Pickard, Ryan Pope, Daniel Rosevear & Tom Woodhouse

A great win for Devon! The morning Foursomes was a tight affair with Devon just edging it 3-2. The singles was, however, a very different affair with Devon winning 8-2 to take the match 11-4.

Every Devon player made a contribution to the points tally - even Team Manager -  Colin Nolan, who was drafted in at the last minute.
