South West Counties Boy's Amateur Championship
at Cotswold Hills GC on Thursday 15th July 2010
The day started badly when Tom Jessamine had to withdraw, due to a back problem. In the morning the weather was atrocious, gale force winds and torrential rain. In the afternoon the lads only had the wind to contend with but these weather conditions were the reason for the high scores in most cases.

After the morning round Devon were lying second to Gloucestershire, 5 shots behind with David Blick and James Smith both returning scores of 77, the rest were in the low 80’s. At once stage in the afternoon it was hopeful that our lads might pull the shots back, as the majority were 1 or 2 under par after 9 holes. However this was not to be, they faltered on the last 9 holes, ending the championship in second place behind Gloucestershire, 7 shots adrift.

The scoring was a lot better, particularly James Smith who closed with a 70, finishing one shot behind the individual winner, Chris Lloyd. In my opinion the end result was partly due to the lads fatigue from battling the weather conditions and possibly lack of concentration causing one or two silly errors. It was disappointing because the Team had prepared correctly and everyone felt confident, unfortunately some of the lads did not perform as well as expected.

The Team to represent Devon are: Tom Jessamine Captain (Woodbury Park), Leon Fricker (Yelverton), Sam Edwards (Bigbury), David Blick (East Devon), Scott Love (Axe Cliff), James Smith (Yelverton), Jimmy Mullen (Royal North Devon), Ryan Acres (Holsworthy)
